Preparing Your Plants for Spring with Compost!

posted 9/28/2017

Apply Now for Benefits in the Spring

Most plants bloom in spring, but a great way to help them thrive is to get them ready in the fall! Metro Waste Authority makes nutrient-rich compost from your yard waste. Using it on your garden gives soil structure and keep your plants healthy.

Applying compost in the fall allows nutrients to penetrate the soil just before the ground freezes. When winter comes and everything is frozen, these nutrients stay where they are in the soil until the spring thaw and then the nutrients and other benefits are available for plants to use as they begin to germinate. Metro Waste Authority’s compost is produced right here in Central Iowa and available for only $10 a cubic yard at our Metro Compost Center in Des Moines.

Bag & Take Compost

We’ve heard your requests for smaller, more convenient quantities of compost, so we’re happy to announce that starting in October, compost will be available to purchase in 2-cubic foot bags for $4 each. Residents can self-fill and self-load the bags at our Metro Northwest Transfer Station from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and the second Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon. Customers on the west side of Polk County will find the Grimes location convenient for purchasing compost. Bags are only available at the Northwest Transfer Station for now as a pilot program, but we’re looking forward to expanding in the future!
